To tell you about IDA JANE I will have to start with my family history as I am 3rd generation in the fashion industry. It started with my Opa (Grandfather) who was a tailor, the family moved from the Netherlands to Australia in 1960, my father was only 15 at the time.
My father started out his apprenticeship learning all
aspects of manufacturing working in factories for other people. His objectives
were to become a pattern maker with extra skills including cutting, sewing,
finishing and pressing. Once he felt confident, he decided to start his own
factory in Dandenong where he employed up to 40 people, making garments for
wholesalers and retailers including Sportsgirl, Prue Acton and Sally Browne
As a youngster I spent many hours in the factory watching
and learning all I could about the trade from dad and the employees. My skills
developed quickly on fabrics, designing and co-ordinating ranges. We started
our own ranges with adult label “Pepe” and a children’s wear collection called
“Pogo” we sold these to retailers, and they were highly successful.
With all these skills we moved into setting up another business, dad doing the manufacturing and myself wholesaling our new labels “Ida Jane” and “Jane Wimmers” to over 300 stores around Australia , it was a very successful business , but due to an economic downturn , we had to close down the wholesaling side deciding to move into retailing and continuing to make up for our own shops. We built this business up to 11 stores throughout Melbourne, metro area and Geelong. We stocked the stores with our own manufactured labels “Ida Jane” and “Jane Wimmers” and complimented them with select garments and accessories from other suppliers. We maintained an “in season concept”.
Due to personal life style and industry changes I had to close my retail shops except for 1 in Doncaster East which I have had for 21 years.
The fashion industry legacy and passion is embedded in my culture and my pursuit is to continue providing beautifully styled garments for you my clients. Look forward to seeing you in the boutique.
